BullShark Caught

13 year old from New York caught a 340 pound Bull shark brought it in and plans to mount it for a trophy. The same teen caught a 551 pound bullshark last year. Teen stated he is planning to catch a Hammer head next. The year before the 551 pound bull shark kill he caught a 461 pounder.

I do not think catching a shark a year is a problem. I just chose the headline to catch strikes at my trolled bait. I see plenty of Bullsharks around however I have rarely seen hammer heads in my humble experience.

Someone of this fishing skill actually does less damage catching a shark a year then the mutton heads loosing 600 yards of 20# monofilament on the reef trying to catch snapper.

There is a poll on the link and comment section if you want to be heard...

I fish. I enjoy it, and I always eat what I catch. If a fish is endangered, I would not fish for that species. I may go out fishing a few times a year, and rarely catch my limit. Last summer we were pulling in so many I stopped fishing after 2 hours into a 4+ hour charter. We caught mostly big eye, and sea bass.

In this case it is sport fishing. Not for consumption, and just for pleasure. I don't agree with folks that fish for no other reason than conquest. Bull sharks are not my favorite, but they have the right to live an propagate. I find this type of fishing cruel, and pointless.

When does the huntingseison on these fishermen(boys) open.

As long as we condone these "smalltime"killers to go there way, there is no way we can stop the big ones.Fishing big game for sport is sick.Killing for the same sport imo is criminal.
As long as we let this go on,there will be NO change. And the shark will lose

I'd be happy to send some bullsharks to anyone who wants them. I often see a 6'+ when lobster diving off Fort Pierce. Other sharks do not seem to bother me much but the bulls sure like to circle around behind you and 600 yards off shore solo diving it will get your heart rate up. I am kind of an thrill junkie anyway though..

And the kid wants to be a marine biologist?! He's sooo fascinated with them he finds pleasure in spending 3 hours reeling them in, killing and mounting them rather than appreciating the absolute beauty and power of a shark. Wonder if he'll look on the fiberglass modeled replicas of their carcasses in the same light of pride at the age of 30 as he did at 13.

I remember this kid... his desire to become a marine biologist is of concern to me as I'm not sure he's the type I want joining "my" fraternity. Maybe he'll grow up by the time he hits college.

Speaking as one who has no objection to fishing for food, but has real concerns about people who kill things for "sport."

It might not seem such a big deal if sport fishers catch a shark here and one there but looking at the numbers it's a bit more scary. Sport fishers pull up 12 Million sharks and rays yearly and that's not a drop in the sea. Most of those are on the red list for engendered species!

In my opinion there is no way to defend the killing an animal that is threatened by extinction!

.........a.........
on my soapbox

Its very sad that parents allow their kids to do stuff like this, I am sure that its not the kid who will pay for the fishing trip and also the stuffing and mounting of these animals, why don't the parents let him catch, weigh and release as that is the best thing to do with any creature that you are not going to eat!
Its very unfortunate that such spoiled little turds are allowed by their parents to carry on this way, I bet they are hero's at school!

If you haven't seen the WPTV video, it's worth a watch. The story is far worse than what you see in print.

Teen catches giant bull shark |West Palm Beach news, Boca Raton news, Treasure Coast news, weather, live radar, investigative from Newschannel 5 | WPTV.com

I already emailed the station managers and reporter, Katie Brace. The managers emailed me back a generic "thanks for the feedback" and forwarded my email to Jay Cashmere, they diver reporter and anchor who does underwater Wednesdays. Jay's a good guy and would never do a stupid story like this.

Especially callous are the comments made by Captain Richard Greiner justifying the "elimination" of the shark. He supposedly has a rotten reputation among other boat captains. No shocker there.

Then I spoke with Bryan Cheney, operations manager at Sailfish Marina. He says they promote catch and release and do not allow for this type of display of sailfish. They do not have the same policy for sharks, although he says that few sharks are brought in this way.

The name of the charter is Boomerang and the captain is John Krohn. I believe Greinger was a mate that day. Perhaps people would like to call him to suggest promoting catch and release:
