OK, noob question time...
How do you carry your SMB? I clipped one to a D ring on my BCD. And I got a spool. Do you keep your spool clipped to your SMB all the time? And if so, how do you securely clip the whole assembly to your BCD? Pictures?
Actually, I'd love to see pictures of how people configure their gear. Shears, dive tool, SMB, camera, the works.

Some people clip to D-rings, but it is just another dangling bit of kit (my son does this). Others have big pockets in their dry suits and that works well. Since I dive wet :depressed: with only 1 small pocket, I drilled a some holes in my back plate and strap it on with 1/8 inch elastic cord on the plate tucked under the wing. It does not dangle, it is always handy when I need it. The thumb spool is wrapped up inside the SMB, tucked in nice and neat so it does not catch on anything There are lots of ways to skin this cat.

I dive a BP/W. I have a crotch strap. On the rear of the strap near the plate, is a d-ring. I clip my reel to it and my SMB or lift bag to it. I clip them seperatly in case I need them seperately. It ride behind the boot of the tank so I doesn't create more drag.

My wife's BC her SMB is clipped to a d-ring on the front under the weight pouch and she has a small spool in the BC pocket.

There are a lot of different ways to attach gear. This will be interesting.

I have never carried an SMB and never needed one. Then, two nights ago, I watched the film OPEN WATER.

Now, I need two - Where do I sign up???:D

To some D ring somewhere----nah, on my BP/W on a rear crotch strap D ring---on my BC, on a small split ring I have installed in the middle of my upper strap..Either way, I attach each one seperately(just in case one comes off---don't want to lose both @ 1 time)......Shearholder(wit shears inside) snap onto my left lower (front)D ring...haven't had any problems ever with these attachment places.....

EDIT:eek:ops, camera, on my right wrist(it's + bouyant so I know right where it is @ all times)

It is one of those things that you hope to never need, but you'll be sad if you need it and don't have it. Same thing with a signal mirror. That could have actually helped out those two in Open Water.

And when you get one, practice shooting it from depth......also, I now(thanks to Dandy Don here) have a 30 gallon white garbage bag in a BC pocket 98% of the time, a 3 cent piece of insurance(ie a white garbage bag spread out on top of the water's gunna be helpful in spotting you from above...:))

I don't want to start a debate over this. Is there actual empirical evidence that supports this?

It is an interesting concept, but I can't think of a few ways this may not work and for another few dollars, there are products out there that are proven to work.

I'm always willing to look at something if it can save a buck or two!

The best place for a spool is in a pocket, as they have a tendency to unravel without noticing, posing an entanglement hazard.
