I only replied to his statement and incorrect spelling of Jacques

Kinda funny.... from the person who miss-spelled First, Copyright, embedded, and referenced World War II as WW 11 <--- "eleven?"

Reference:

sam miller:
Read Dockery's frist post & second post---He made the statement ...

A few hours later the victim lay dead with an Arbalete spear shaft in bedded in his body.

copywright 2010, Dr Samuel Miller

After WW 11 there were surplus stores on every corner so I went about construction a Cousteau Lung using WW11 air craft LP walk around bottles.."

sam miller:
I only replied to his statement and incorrect spelling of Jacques and advised him of my relationship..Suggest that you read it....Nothing more -- nothing less..

how does advising us of your 'relationship' to Jacques Cousteau pertain to "who created the dive flag"? :idk:

to me it means "nothing more, nothing less" to this discussion.

just Sam trying to "fluff his resume" and discredit Dockery ..... his "competition" in the inaccuracy of his story.

Sam has done some cool things in his life. I will give him credit for that.

exactly....

Mike,
My relationship with Zeek represents one line on my resume...

To Mr. Sam Miller:
This is Doc Dockery. I must admit I read Scuba Board only about one time per year and I do not know how to respond to the various departments there are. Your account of Mr. Ted Nixon being the "father" of the dive flag may by now be an accepted story of its existence, however, Mr Nixon did not create the flag. My wife and I created the flag for the very purpose it is being used for today. I needed a marker to designate my exact location while diving. I was using the Navy "baker" flag as my marker as we had done in the Navy. The baker flag simply implies "danger" and was not exactly what I wanted it to mean. The first change we made to the flag was to put the white strip across the exact middle of the flag. We later learned it was the flag of Austria and we changed the stripe to run diagonally from the top left to the bottom right. As I have said, Ted worked for us in our Diving business and later for U. S. Divers as a Rep. He sold flags for us over most of the North eastern states for a commission. I am now 80 years old and it does bother me a little when I read an authority, such as yourself, get the facts wrong. Respectfully, Doc Dockery

Eighty (80) years old!

Now the age card has been dealt...

I some how assume that you think I just awarded my Eagle Scout ....

or perhaps just graduated from university..

or just received my second lieutenants bars...

FYI;

When I graduated from university the Korean war was in progress so I was immediately was inducted into the USAF as a Second Lieutenant, finally separated years later as a Captain.

All of this before I was called as an Expert Witness to defend the Divers Flag for the first time in a court of law

So you can figure out my age,

sdm

besides yet another instance of "resume fluffing", exactly what does this have to do with who created the Dive Flag? :idk:

While I commend your service to our country.... let's get back on topic :thumb:

Skin Diver magazine (SDM) the world's first magazine devoted to recreational diving was first published in December 1951. For a period of about 10 years it was the only document of recreational diving in the world. Since the publication of SDM there has been many diving publications, most did not survive. Currently the free "Dive Training" which is sent to all dive shops, dive operators, charter boats and new students apparently is the current leading diving magazine in the US

Because of my long term legal involvement spanning almost 50 years defending the flag and it's purpose I have the SDM copies related to the dive flag in my file-- Unfortunately my scanner is inoperable and can not scan the pages. I PMed two apparently neutral posters to this thread asking if I sent hard copies to them would they scan and post-- one never responded and the other declined since that time they have spread their expertise else where and have not responded to this thread

It is recognized that Ted Nixon presented the red & white dive flag to the diving world in the September 1957 issue.

It is appropriate to review this issue and others devoted to the Flag, Therefore September & October 1957

1957

Month page authors subject

Sept 4 Ted Nixon editorial comment - 2 sentences

Oct 11 Ted Nixon Thanks for mentioning Dive Flag
Oct 11 Don Tait Use seven flag

Nothing from Doc Dockery!
Agreed?
Comment?

Well my 2 cents worth would be that it was Ted's job to market the flag. Marketing an item does not make you the inventor.

Mr. Miller, thank you for staying on top of this.

If you have a digital camera, could you photograph page four from the September 1957 issue? Another option would be to take it to a copy shop or library for scanning. Short of that, even transcribing here exactly what Nixon and the editors wrote would be a great help.

Thanks again!
