I had a terrible time with the intova. Videos would be corrupted, buttons on the camera actually fell off. The build quality is nothing close to a go pro. The new go pro 3 in low light is amazing. On the exact same dive (in a cave) we shot a go pro hero 2 with a 50 watt video light. Then we shot a go pro hero 3 with a standard 10 watt. The hero 3 footage looked amazing even with the smaller light!

Thanks Bryan. Appreciate all the links.
good info about the camera shake when hand held.
Have at least narrowed the choice down to tray mount, telescopic pole or pistol grip.
still not really sure how to choose between them!

I received my Intova Sport HD II today and while trying to change the time the camera shut off without warning. I sent a message to Intova on their Facebook page as the toll free number doesn't work in Canada. Is this something I could fix myself with a firmware update or is the camera indeed defective? It's brand new.

OK, I am interested in buying my first underwater camera, and I have a couple of questions about both the Intova Sport HD II and the GoPro.
The Intova Sport HD II has a built-in battery. All batteries have a limited lifespan. What happens in a couple of years when the battery can't hold a charge anymore? Throw the camera away? Get the battery replaced at a service center?
The GoPro has no LCD display. How is one certain that they are filming the video properly (framed properly)?
Thanks

I would imagine you could get the battery replaced, but it might be time for a new camera by then anyway. The easiest thing would be to contact Intova and ask them how much it currently costs and how long it would take. Because I am sure the price would most likely change a few years down the road when you would actually do it. And then hope they still have batteries in stock to do it.

The GoPro has a LCD backpack you can buy if you really want one. I do not have one (LCD BackPac) and have not had any real problems, it should only take a few times to figure out where the camera is pointing.

I went with the Intova HDII.
Here is the first ever video I have shot - lots of problems with it but all user error. I think the camera is fantastic.

Your anecdotal evidence is useful, but your recommendation is less so. Intova had some firmware issues that they addressed; including sending a new unit to folks uncomfortable updating the firmware themselves.

GoPro has had its own nightmares including faulty hinges that led to leaks. How did GoPro handle that?

Anyway, both really good action video cameras with excellent but differing features.

What is the difference between the mount on on the Intova and the GoPro?

It seems like the GoPro will have the most options (like an iPhone versus Android phones) because of the market share.

Has anyone found that to be the case, or not the case? Not just for mounts but lenses bags etc?

I have had no problem with mounts thus far. I have had the Intova mounted to the Z Gear, helemt, head, mask and tray. I can't think of any other way to mount it that I would need. My favorite is the helmet mount for several reasons. Enjoyed the video JJDig. Care to share your setting and editing software?

Thanks!
I used the dive setting and VSDC Video Editor (free).
Here is another video. This time using a red filter instead of the dive setting.

(There is a glitch with the music though)

I really like your helmet mount. I tried a mask clamp on one dive but didn't get the angle right and so didn't capture much.
