Anyone been stung by a jellyfish?

Dived in schools of stinging box jellies, have surfaced in a slew of Portugese man'o'war (techincally not a jellyfish though), dived through masses of stinging upside down jellies and loads of moon jellies.... and never ever been stung :) even when not diving in a suit. Sea lice, fire coral...

    Barrier reef in trouble

At least there is some good news... Australia to Ban Fishing from Third of Barrier Reef Australia will ban fishing and shipping from one-third of Australia's Great Barrier Reef from July 1 under laws approved by parliament Thursday for protecting the world's largest living structure...

    filthy cruise ship thread (resurrected)

OK OK! I thought I did good with that link :( Too late to get stuck into this again. To be honest, I don't have the time to do any more research on Lomborg, sadly (although I am keen to do so, maybe when I have more time). I do however, know that he is out numbered in many of his points with...

    filthy cruise ship thread (resurrected)

Back to Boogie's challenge for me to find actual parts of Dr. Lomborg's book which have been labelled as incorrect. Try http://www.onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=773 for a little reading and see what you think.

also of interest.... "A key conclusion of this study is that there is a pressing need for further research into the impacts of cruise ship activity on the environment. Although much is known in general about the effects of air pollution, oily water and untreated waste, there is little data...

Back to archman's request for scientific data on cruise ships.... this is the best I could do for now and apologies that the paper is over 10 years old.... Title CRUISE SHIPS A SERIOUS THREAT TO CORAL REEFS AND ASSOCIATED ORGANISMS Author SMITH S H [a] Author Address [a] SEACO...

    filthy cruise ship thread (resurrected)

My apologies. I have just looked at the links above and also found the following articles. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3340305.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3486894.stm I had missed the recent news on this issue (it had not made the same headlines as much...

    another blow to underwater research

Sadly, IMO, most Americans are going to be more impressed by a mission to Mars than anything NOAA may have planned :( One major problem here lies with environmental education and awareness. There simply isn't enough to generate the pressure on governments. If everyone actualy had a clue about...

    filthy cruise ship thread (resurrected)

Yes, I have read MOST of the book. Not from cover to cover I must admit. There is a lot there, so I had to be picky about which bits I read, as the book was on loan from the library. Will send you the links about BL's book tmrw. In early January 2003 the Danish Committees on Scientific...

Nobody is forcing you to read this thread fgray. If you haven't got anything to add to the discussion, why bother making snide comments? Perhaps it's you that needs a life?

    filthy cruise ship thread (resurrected)

Boogie, I don't know if I made it clear, but I was trying to state that there was smoke screens on both sides of the coin. SOME environmental activists do put their own spin on things just like the companies they are attacking. I am just as much against both types of propaganda. That was my...

    filthy cruise ship thread (resurrected)

I am so annoyed the old cruise ship post got deleted. I pinned up some really great stats and info. Oh well. There's some more info to be found on the Ocean Conservancy website http://www.oceanconservancy.org/dynamic/home/home.htm - see links on homepage. But on the aqua culture tangent...

    Suggestion Reefs only?

Could we perhaps have this forum encompassing all marine ecosystems which interest divers.... non-reef ecosystems can be high in biodiversity and just as threatened as reef ecosystems.... it seems a shame to exclude them. Kelp forests and other cold water benthic communities and caves are great...

Well I bet we wont have any COTs there..... :) Have you Yanks already changed the official spelling of sulphur to sulfur?? That is sad to see. What will be next.... Fosforus?

Effect of Crown of Thorns (COT) Season

I went around one little bit of the GBR injecting COT with sulphuric acid while assisting with a programme trying to eradicate them from one dive site.... later after talking to lots of different people including scientists where I was working in Oz, I discovered that there is nothing we can...

    Barrier reef in trouble

I think this is happening because the capatilist west is constantly screwing over the 3rd world and places like the Phillipines don't have enough to survive without destorying their own environment... also I would guess that the natives actions are induced by the government's mismangement of...

    Too many divers?

sorry if this debate is already over but I only just got here.... back to the to touch or not to touch... now I am one of the most anal "the environment is not there for us to poke and prod" kind of people I know but just to add another view on this issue I shall add my two bubbles... It is...

    how do I get involved?

Soooooooooo cool that you are wanting to get into protecting/ monitoring and researching the marine environment. Best place to start for you I think is volunteering on a program for a summer or for a year that involves diving on reefs, and monitoring fish or helping with a study on reefs...
