18 yrs old, never able to clear ears

Thanks Saturation - Where would I find the treatment regimen for Eustachian tube dysfunction before going to a doctor? She does not have pain flying, though she does indicate that her ears bother her... Thanks!

18 yrs old, never able to clear ears

Hi, I am working with a young girl that has been swimming and snorkeling extensively, but has never been able to clear via the valsalva or other method, only time. We have done several pool sessions where we try the valsalva, swallowing, jaw movement, etc, but the only successful method...

    Belize/Utila

What's your price range per day (food/lodging/diving)? There are some great places in Belize. Lighthouse Reef is fantastic - near the Blue Hole, but also other great diving. Turneffe is wonderful as well. In Belize, plan on getting off the mainland if you stay up north.

    What is PADI?

BTW - PADI's history, key individuals and even certification stats are well documented - both on PADI's site and other sites on the web. PADI is also visible at most industry events - if you're really interested, you can find much of what you are looking for that way.

    What is PADI?

A "sales rep" in most private companies does not get access to financial info - heck, you could up and leave for NAUI tomorrow and share that data! If you are so concerned, why don't you email them and ask for the political affiliations of the owners? Of course, even a public company isn't...

    What is PADI?

Are you serious? As a private company there is no requirement to share that information publicly. Here in the states, there are very large privately held corporations - much larger than PADI.

    What is PADI?

Why do you pay them every year? Are you an instructor? Or do you have dive insurance through them? Otherwise, unless you are pursuing specialties or further education, you have no reason to pay PADI.

    DEEP DEEP diver??

You can't do it quickly or inexpesively and expect to survive. When people tell you that you will kill yourself if you attempt it, yet you continue to post that that is your specific intent, you have to be willing to accept that they may become upset - while it is your life you're talking...

    The PADI thing...

I know the insurance issue- but again, this is the industry as a whole that has adopted and allows this to continue. It absolutely benefits PADI and the other agencies, but it is not solely their doing. I wonder what effort is involved in coming up with "Fred's Diving Cert" and pawning that...

    The PADI thing...

Exactly - I'm so glad you understood my point. If the risks were as great as you propose, and given the number of divers from the major agencies diving today, it is statistically improbable that the accident rate would be lower than other sports that require no training or oversight if the...

    The PADI thing...

Exactly - as the statistics show. I don't sign my lift ticket. Also, that is only in the US. Buy one and be free... Explain it any way you want - in the end, I'd let Mike make his own arguements - he's much better at it than you are. PADI wasn't always the leader - the other agencies, if they...

    The PADI thing...

Not really - you can go diving without the card - there's no law that says you can't. You can also open a shop and sell air to anyone you like - no card required. You're point being? This is probably the leading cause in bowling alley's too, but no one is calling for a fitness test there (or...

    instant experts

Some people have to do that to show off. Some people are just so darn excited about the new sport they want to share what they think they know with everyone. I tolerate the 2nd group much more than the 1st - and it's usually pretty easy to tell the difference.

    The PADI thing...

In the US, it is not as easy to ski out of bounds - certainly you can, but not generally as a beginner unless someone takes you. Skiing is a skill and most folks start out with lessons or are taught by friends. No, I don't think lessons should be required, but perhaps some deaths would be...

    The PADI thing...

If there were a buck to be made, you can bet your shop that an accident attorney contacted the family to explain the situation. Your first sentence is dead-on. A number of back-country skiiers die from not having the proper life support equipment - it's called clothing and it prevents...

    DEEP DEEP diver??

SeaHound, Presuming for a moment that you could actually execute just the dive portion at 200' safely given your experience (which I doubt)... On these 7 dives you've done so far, have you done any filming? I have no doubt your a top-notch cinematographer on land, but you'll be dealing...

    The PADI thing...

Probably didn't have a case - the local accident lawyers generally wouldn't miss an op... More importantly, do you? Can you prove in court that the standards are insufficient? If so, explain the accident/injury/death rate as compared to a non-certification activity, such as skiing. Until...

    The PADI thing...

Unless, of course, you hit a tree. Check skiing accidents and deaths - it might suprise you... That, my friend, is a whole different kettle of fish. If you want to argue conservation or environmental impact, you'll have a difficult time of it. While you can point to direct human impact for...
