All the advice that has already been given is the key. Even if you were able to complete the class, you would never be able to safely dive at any depth with that panic still in your mind. Ideally, you would to be as comfortable under the water as you are sitting on your couch at home. My 10...
My son was certified at 10 and is now 12. We will keep him at 60' or less other than for very brief trips lower. We will not allow him to go anywhere near the NDL limits and that often means that a second dive is cut short or skipped entirely. We stress the safety stops and make sure to take...
Do you guys consider diving at Blue Grotto a cave dive?
They consider it an OW dive and rent lights to anyone. http://www.divebluegrotto.com/bluegrottomap.jpg
What about the Ginnie Ballroom?
I was able to practice some of the techniques hinted at earlier approcahing the grate at...
Like Deputy Dan, we spent nearly 2,500 per person to get the minimal "high end" gear. We went with top of the line Zeagle BCd's and regulators, one piece wetsuits, etc... That includes the Aeris Atmos2 computer. NO cave or deep stuff, just single AL 80's. Everything we purchased will take us...
As Terry said, just relax and breathe deeply and slowly. When you are exited (or exerted) you tend to breathe faster and more shallow ... it is far less efficient and you will speed through your air.
My wife is pretty good on air but she was recently watching our young son follow me...
My Ranger has 44 lbs of lift and I don't think I have ever used more than half of the capacity. On my first dive I had nearly 10 lbs too much lead (the dive shop guy must have been guessing on Salt water, instead of fresh, and a thicker wetsuit) and the BC did not care. It was not until we did...
Assuming that you use all the air in your tanks (although we never do) you would have 25% more air/time with the 100cf tank. The useable air ratio should remain about the same.
Similar thinking would give you 50% more air with a 120 tank (over an 80cf tank)
I recently purchased the ZX/Flathead VI combo and it is the closest thing to breathing above the water as I have experienced. The LDS guys use this combination on their Tech rigs and rave about the quality and reliability.
I mentioned to my instructor (at the last classroom session of the OW course) that I was interested in Nitrox training and he mentioned that I might consider taking the AOW instead, with Nitrox as one of the items, as it would be much more economical and informative than taking a few individual...
I agree that any student should have the ability (right) to ask to be "buddied up" with an alternate partner for any reason. You have to feel comfortable with your buddy before you can depend on them to potentially "save" you in a bad situation. Many people are anxious enough to remove their...
I would like to drift this thread slightly in another direction ...
My Wife, 10yr old son, and I were all recently PADI OW certified. My greatest fears were that my son might not be able to master the tables & calculations required for the academic portion and that my wife might not be able...
Robin,
I joke that my wife is built like a cartoon character ... she is 5'2" 38-24-36 and has a hard time buying clothes. The ONLY two BC's that felt comfortable, and did not restrict her movement, were the Zeagle Zena and Ladyhawk. All of the others had straps or panels that dug into the...
Confessions are in order...
My local dive shop is managed by good folks that give good advice and treat customers fairly. My problem is that they only carry one or two brands of most items and if I want to look at a wider selection I have to go elsewhere. Today we visited another nearby...
Pasley,
I am also a business owner/manager and agree, in principle, with much of what you say. Where I disagree is that you would rather have a customer stay away from your store before they came in and simply "looked around" for items that they intended to purchase online. I would rather...
If the price difference between the LDS and mail order is only 5-10% most folks would buy from the LDS. The fact that you can walk out with the product that same day is certainly worth something, plus the fact that you get to examine and test (if applicable) the exact item before you pay. If...
I think the guy may have just been too embarrassed to face you after making such a rookie mistake. This simply could be his coping mechanism. Rookies that try hard to hide the fact that they are rookies often end up looking like really stupid rookies.
