Hardly anyone I've mt does a check--boats or sore. So what's the difference?

Really? That's terrible. If I couldn't get my buddy to work through a simple pre-dive check, what are my odds of getting help in the water?
I learned BWRAF (big white rabbits are fluffy) and initially I only did it on my dive buddy. Until the day I checked the DM mentally and asked him if I was good to go, and he nodded, and I jumped in with no gear on - no BCD, no tank, just my mask and fins. Obviously I should always check myself, and I was really embarrassed and took a ton of flak from everyone on the boat. But secretly, I still blame my "buddy" in part for giving me the go ahead even though he surely could see I had no gear on? Oh well.
