Darn it - dup.

Uncle Pug once bubbled...

Now if a DIR diver were diving with a panic prone non-DIR diver then it would be incumbent upon the DIR diver to be aware of the non-DIR diver's needs and provide the panic stricken non-DIR diver with the long hose reg (but not the full 7') before the panic stricken non-DIR had a chance to start grabbing for things.

But lets say for sake of your argument that the DIR diver was asleep on the job and the panic stricken non-DIR diver came upon him or her unawares and grabbed the regulator... no problem... a simple dip of the head releases the hose and the fight insues...

But you see, the problem is coming from the panic stricken non-DIR diver and I suppose the scenarios that one could invent are endless....

UP - I didn't invent the scenario - the panic stricken diver has been brought up many times before as a reason for donating your primary and having a bungeed alternate ready to take it's place - it's even cited in this thread.

And you suppose correctly that one could invent many scenarios - there's even one a page back about how a long hose could save you after a current pulls you off a wreck.

One should always be aware of what's going on around you and your primary should never leave your mouth without your permission. There's no agency that has a lock on safe diving. But it's fair to say that one could probably find incidents where DIR divers have panicked, just as one could find instances where non-DIR divers have panicked as well.
