While that figure may be a slight exaggeration (and it may not), it will be somewhere close. It is hard to count them all; federal, state, local, special agency and military.

I don't know how many people there are in your town, but there are, for instance, around 45,000 members of the New York City Police Department alone.

In my "town"? About 1.600 I'd say. We still have 4 taxis, a pizza place and a bar + groceries and mail service. But no police. Haven't seen any of them around here since I moved here! But then I haven't heard of anything that was stolen either.

Yes, I know there are many police officers in the US. In fact I'd say you have a much better service to the public than we have over here. If I'd called in a burglary, the best thing I could hope for would be if they could come the next working day... -If at all! And if I had tossed over someone trying to steal a car, I'd have to be careful, or I'd be arrested myself, for using force...

-But I know the tricks of how to explain the situation, and I've stopped quite a few rascals during some years of working night shifts in the streets of Oslo. No, not as a police officer. I drove night shifts in a taxi...

Hey Chip... I like the new avitar...

Sorry didn't mean to hijack...

I don't have any questions for cops at the moment.

If you are talking about the recent Death Penalty case here in California, no I don't agree with it, and I stand behind the Governator's decision to deny it. Tookie, for all his "reformed-ness", never truly renounced his gang ties, and never expressed remorse for his horrible killings. He may have written books trying to scare kids away from gangs, but he himself has never regretted being a gangster himself.

The "Crips" gang is a plague that has yet to be eradicated from the Southern California scene, and Tookie helped to create it.

semi-loaded q: Do you agree with clemency?

I don't believe that it is a loaded question, unless you have a hidden agenda behind it. It is, however, a difficult question, and not one with a simple answer.

Do I, personally, believe in clemency? Yes, I believe that it should be available as a final measure in the justice system, but it should occur only under the strictest conditions, with much thought and multiple reviews.

P.S.---In the Tookie Williams case, I believe, as Ron does, that the Governor made the right decision. This was a man who shot one person in the back, and then laughed about the gurgling sounds he made when he died. This was also a man who shot and killed a mother, father, and young daughter because they were in his way.

Tookie never took responsibility for his crimes, nor did he repent of them at any time.

Scenario: :D :D

You catch up to a speeding car. On the back window there is a dive flag. In the back of the car is a bunch of dive gear. There is only one person in the car. When you inform the driver that they were speeding they politely say "I'm so sorry, but I'm late to get to a dive charter."

Do you:
1. Cite them for speeding and tack on an extra fine for not driving with a buddy?

2. Let them off after you've made sure they have a dive plan?

3. Quickly escort them to the departing charter?

thanks BJD and RonDawg, you hit the nail right on the head. The reason why I asked it was cause of the media circus surrounding Tookie Williams. I didn't have to ask a follow up question since you already answered it. :)

.....I still don't like them....

And I am sure that feeling you have gets communicated, so it becomes mutual!

.....I have a difficult time complying to (sic) any rules.....:bonk:

We know that, Shaka. Trust me, we know that!:D

.....I also drive a Mustang, and that thing only starts to run properly at 85mph.....

That is one of the oldest ones in the book!! So how many times has your lawyer gotten your license back for you??:D

I'm sure they pickup my attitude when I get pulled over, especially if someone else was going faster than me. Oh, one night a cop in a SUV was on my "A", and I didn't even know there was SUV cops cars. Oh well, I thought this guy was trying to harrass me and I sped up. Not a good idea, he waited till I was doing a 100 before the lights went on. You can imagine how polite I was that night......haha, it's all fun and makes for good bar stories with your buddies.

PS. My worst one so far, in South Africa I was caught three times in one day by the same cop, all for speeding? Geezuz!!!!!
