My first thought was that her dad gave her the idea. Dad helped me back in '66 with my volcano that received honorable mention.

I don't think the kid is really responsible... but the father on the other hand... was aware of the original research of Mr Jud.... i would like to hear more about this from him.. either on here or as a lecture at one of the local meetups -- maybe at bugfest?
Maybe but I wouldnt be surprised if it is sour grapes because a sixth grader scooped him. The real solution is to replace all the marine biologists with sixth graders. The marine fisheries budget would drop and something might actually get done. Every minute environmental problem is a crisis in order to secure research funds. Actually solving a problem would dry up the grants.
Specific rules stipulate that no animals are harmed. It's amazing that this project wasn't thrown out to begin with.
