I'm a Fish!
Planning on teaching OW dives 1&2 this Saturday but Poseidon is not cooperating. My usual sites for OW classes are Heisler and Vets but am wondering if there's a more protected cove that will be calmer/easier. I plan to go scout a few sites (Alamitos in Long Beach and Cabrillo in San Pedro) on Friday but if you guys have any suggestions, that would be awesome. Thanks all.

Certifying with beach dives are kind of a scheduling nightmare for this reason. Sometimes you can get the students to just agree to pay for a boat or casino rather than reschedule. But Alamitos Bay is one sure I wish I knew about before recently! But being a tether! The Viz can turn to muck fast, so just tether to each other and save yourself that trouble. Otherwise it's super protected and I would use it for local OW cert Beach diving.
Park across from and enter at 69th street.

The Magicseaweed forecast for Shaw's Cove is 1-2 ft with 16 sec intervals. The downside is that there will probably be a lot of people and the swell is from the south so it will be somewhat direct but it is what I would consider dive-able (and a nice dive to boot).

I didn't even bother checking shaw's because I figured it would be the same as Heisler but you're right!

Yeah I'm learning that now hah. I'm gonna ask if they wanna do casino for 3&4 because its so much better but I really like to do the first two dives somewhere basic and easy to focus on skills. Thanks for the info about Alamitos though!

Cabrillo Beach is pretty well-protected by the jetty on one side and the point on the other, but the viz tends to be worse than other sites.

Good to know, I'm not too concerned with bad vis as long as the surf is relaxed.
