It was 1 scuba diver with one set of gear... the victim was buddy breathing w/out fins from the scuba diver... seems they separated and the victim never made it back to shore...
Thanks for letting us know. Some of us have been tempted to do that with friends, but it has a lot of risks.

Pay attention, this is in chronological order.

DESTIN — After almost six hours of searching, a local man reported missing on the beach still had not been found Friday night.

A friend reported that he last saw the 22-year-old about 2 p.m. on the beach near the east jetty where he was diving, said Michele Nicholson, spokeswoman for the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

The friend said that when he came up from a dive and returned to shore, the man was gone but his belongings were still there, Nicholson said.

The Sheriff's Office received a call about the missing man at 2:48 p.m.

The Sheriff's Office, Coast Guard, Destin Beach Safety, Destin Fire Rescue and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission searched for the man near East Pass until about 9 p.m., when they called it off until Saturday morning.

“There’s major concern because his belongings were still there and there's been a full-out search on land and in the water and they haven’t been able to locate him,” Nicholson said.

She said the friend reported that some people on the beach said they saw someone struggling in the water. Deputies were trying to find the witnesses to get more information.

A red flag was posted on the beach Friday, indicating strong surf and currents.

The man carried identifications from Florida and New York, but had been living in the area recently, Nicholson said.

9 a.m. UPDATE: The Destin Fire Control disctrict says the man is still missing and the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office and other agencies are continuing the search this morning.

11 a.m. update: The Sheriff's Office offers this update on the situation.

A search continues this morning for a 22-year-old Fort Walton Beach man reported missing Friday afternoon while swimming near Destin’s East Jetties.

Stephon Noray and a friend had rented scuba gear earlier in the day. Noray’s friend says he went out diving and last saw Noray on the beach around 2 p.m. When he came up later, Noray was not there, but his belongings remained. He initially assumed Noray had gone to his car.

Some witnesses who had noticed a man struggling in the water told deputies they swam out to help, but could not locate anyone and a Coast Guard boat arrived.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Coast Guard, Destin Beach Safety, and Florida Fish and Wildlife conducted a search for Noray until dark Friday night with no success.

They are back on the scene this morning to continue their efforts.

5 P.m. UPDATE: The Sheriff's Office offers this update on the situation.

The body of a Fort Walton Beach man was recovered shortly after 1 p.m. this afternoon by the Okaloosa Sheriff’s Dive Team, after it was discovered by an Escambia County Search and Rescue crew. The Okaloosa Sheriff’s Office and multiple other agencies had been searching the waters around Destin’s East Pass following reports that swimmer went missing near the East Jetties Thursday afternoon.

22-year old Stephon Noray of Waters Circle and a friend had rented scuba gear earlier in the day Thursday. Noray’s friend says he went out diving and last saw Noray on the beach around 2 p.m. When he came up later, Noray was not there, but his belongings remained. He initially assumed Noray had gone to his car.

Some witnesses who had noticed a swimmer struggling in the water told deputies they swam out to help, but could not locate anyone and a Coast Guard boat arrived.

The Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Coast Guard, Destin Beach Safety, and Florida Fish and Wildlife conducted a search for Noray until dark Friday night with no success and resumed the search this morning.

The body was located shortly after one p.m. about one-hundred feet north and west of the L-jetty off the East Jetties in Destin. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

NO WHERE does it say that one or the other was not in SCUBA.

Silliness.

An Escambia County search and rescue crew discovered Noray’s body about 100 feet north and west of the L-jetty off the east jetty.

Me and my safety diver made the discovery for the S.O.....never put your faith in the media coverage... and please don't be so condescending...

Please don't be reading into what isn't there. It's very common for people to make statements drawn from false conclusions.

What does it mean, the victim was buddy breathing with the diver? Was Stephon Norey on the diver's octopus? Or true buddy breathing?
Was he a swimmer who went down with the diver as a quick lark, and didn't realize how far back to shore it was?

Was Stephon even certified?

If the diver was buddy breathing with Stephon, why did the diver report that he thought Stephon was still on the bank, and had gone to the car?

The Sheriff's Office pulled the body from the water. Noray was wearing a wetsuit and a diving harness, but no snorkel, scuba tank or goggles, Nicholson said.

A diving harness itself or probably a BC?

The Sheriff's Office should check with the shop about exactly what was rented and by whom. I hope the survivor did not take the victim for a fateful joyride as has been alleged.

Heck, who knows what the diving harness is. Maybe a weight harness? Maybe the guy was a freediver? WORST - maybe he took a hit off the divers reg at depth, and then ascended while holding his breath.

I don't think Jax meant to be condescending. She has a strong personality, but we do like to know sources of info for discussions - and I don't think any of us puts much faith in the media.

So you two found the deceased? Were you part of the search teams? Good to have him found, but can't be enjoyable. Did you notice if he had dive weights attached...?

Even tho you two found him, I'm confused on how he got there. Even the story you cite includes...
The friend said that he was diving off the beach in East Pass while Noray stayed on shore. When he returned from his dive, Noray was gone but his belongings were still there.

Y'know . . . the more I think about it, the more sense it makes that one was diving and the other was swimming / freediving.

If you don't think about it, offering someone a 'breath' from your reg doesn't seem like a big deal, but if the free diver doesn't know about it, that compressed air will give him an over-expansion injury upon ascent.

[speculation]
Diver sees friend, friend takes a breath, waves off. Diver goes about his merry way.

Free diver surfaces, and has over-expansion injury, little air sacs popping like soap bubbles. Witnesses see swimmer in distress. Swimmer looses consciousness and slips below.

Diver comes to beach, wonders where is his friend, friend, swimming on surface, should have beat him there. [/speculation]
