I like my Converse All Star (Chuck Taylor's) for long walks and climbing around rocks. I have a bad ankle, and knees also so I feel your pain. The Chuck's have some cushion to them and support for my ankles. They also are pretty cheap, easy to get and durable, and have built in drain holes already. I use a pair of neoprene socks in them for warmth. Just took the socks with me to the store for proper fit. Fo me it seems to help.
