Although our local reefs seem to be making a comeback, it's been a tough year trying to find the once plentiful and/or new subjects. But this week our spirits were lifted by the appearance of young-of-the-year rockfish. It was delightful watching them flit around the low lying rocks. I shot several different halfbanded and calico rockfish individuals at ~1.5 - 2 inches.
At the link below is a collection of some of the critters we've found around Palos Verdes this year.
1.5 inch juvenile halfbanded rockfish, Sebastes semicinctus
Phil and I had never heard of this species before.
1.5 - 2 inch juvenile calico rockfish, Sebastes dallii
Juvenile sheephead, Semicossyphus pulcher
Two-spot octopus, Octopus bimaculatus
Furry hermit, Paguristes ulreyi and California longbeak shrimp, Pandalus gurneyi
