At work, we have the capability to teflon coat our BP's. Since we make them ourselves, also at work, we do it for s***s and giggles. It actually works great. It is hard to scratch, and holds up well.

I think you should leave it as it is! It is cool to be beat up-you look like an old pro...in fact, have a shark's tooth sticking halfway out of it and have a good story...

...the damn thing is an SS backplate. Who cares how it looks? I know one guy who scratched his name in really big letters right down the front of his plate...looks like hell, but when there are 8 of us with BPs/wings on the boat, guess who has the least amount of problems locating his rig.

One thing you can do since it is aluminum (this goes for aluminum tanks as well) is to bead-blast them.
I have done quite a few tanks using a high-silica sandblast mix in a simple sand or bead blaster.
It makes a nice finish that is also slip resistant. I do it to ALL my tanks...

I used the Line X compound on my backplates. It ended up sweet. Since it has a little texture to it, it stays on your back a little better then a slick piece of metal.

It was around $20 to get the plate coated. I've had them for a year or two now. No problems.
