I doubt that detailed discussion on why USAmericans are leery of travel in that part of the world would be within the TOS here. If I were headed thataway, I'd certainly check the State Dept Advisories, along with the CDC suggestions.

I don't know where Jimmy is, but he still could...

There's the difference.

While you were checking the internet, I just jumped on a plane and went.

What a great trip it was! Yowzah.

I rated it just slightly :D better than Coz or Club Dread. :eyebrow:

The Thistlegorm was just the cats pyjamas, we dove it for two days. All the other wrecks. Fantastico!

Sharm was outta-f'n-control. I was the oldest person there :14: . This was party central.

Again? You bet. American passport and US Dollars in hand!

Camel Divers looked to be the best, or check Red Sea College of Diving. Camel had it's own bar and hookah lounge- so there's a big plus! :)

I'll second, or third (or whatever) Camel Divers if you are going to Sharm. Stayed there 3 years ago and enjoyed it. But I am an old guy and prefer someplace more sedate. The next two years I went to Marsa Alam and preferred it to Sharm. I am off tomorrow morning for Wadi Lahami! By the way, I'm also American and feel perfectly safe in Egypt.
Enjoy your trip!

Phil

I live in CAiro and visit Sharm regularly. I always stay and dive with Oonas. I can't rate them highly enough. British run, good location and dive guides/intructors are expats who have been there for years. The others metioned also have good reputations. I would also agree with Asser and also recommend you go to Dahab - it is only a 1 hour taxi drive from Sharm and there are some lovely sites there too - plus it is more laid back and more of a diving dues place. i use Poseidon. RE security, I work with Americans in cAiro and we all go to Sharm often. mafishe muskala as they say here (no problem). It is safe enough. Sheena

Hi Jimmy
there's another way to look at which dive operation to use in Sharm & that is where you are staying.

Sharm has grown rapidly in last 10 or so years. Before everything was centred around the pretty resort of Na'ama Bay. The original dive centres are still there & still provide excellent service. Red Sea Dive College, Sinai Divers, Camel Dive Club, Emperor (formerly Aquanaut) + +

Now hotels have developed along that entire stretch of coast. All the centres mentioned above now have satelite operations in many of the hotels. But there are controls on where boats can depart from. Generally you'll need to leave from one of 2 points. The jetty at Na'ama Bay or the jetty in the old town of Sharm El Mayer.

If you already have a hotel booked in old Sharm it might be better to dive with one of the operations based locally so you can socialise with other guests & get in & out of the dive centre easily to settle bills, hire gear etc.

If you need any advise you can always drop us an email. We don't generally get into booking the diving only but we're not going to charge for a bit of friendly advise either (holidays@h2odive.co.uk)

Have a good trip and don't worry about what's been said re Americans travelling.
So long as you don't start beating us at soccer we'll leave you alone :D

We were visiting Egypt and diving the Red Sea on a regular basis prior to 9-11. I would no advise any American to travel there under present circumstances.
sdm

What are the present circumstances?? I went last year with my wife and my son, and ever person I met (except the Russians) was very friendly...the includes Red Sea Shadow :)

The Sinai is safe I can assure you...there are no state department warnings regading this area.

Now here is my suggestion...skip Sharm. It is very busy and unless you speak Russian, as an American you may not feel like you fit in at all. Go to Dahab instead...I don't want to plug Dahab too much and have it turn into another place like Sharm, p[acked with tourists, but it is much more laid back and the people there are warm and very friendly...not to mention the diving is world class and less crowded.

Nah...I'd just go, where shorts and a ball cap with a shirt that says..."I'm a friggin American, what are you going to do about it??".

JK

Seriously...Egypt gets a bad rap here in the U.S. people there may not like our politicians, but they always say they love the American people. It's the same in every country around the world right now and Egypt is no different.

From a presonal point of view, I would visit both Sharm & Dahab, especially if you're only here for a short space of time.
Must see's for the area of Sharm include Shark & Yolanda reef, Dunraven, Thistlegorm (all of which require a visa). In Tiran it's worth visiting Jackson & Thomas Reef (current's permitting). All in all, there are many wonderful sites in the redsea, unique to every divers need. Dahab is indeed very pretty too. A lot of what you do depends on how many days you want to spend diving. Just remember that Shark & Yolanda & the Thistlegorm are world famous for their marine life & are advanced dives.
It is worth it.... believe me ! :OD
