Layang Layang is pretty good but only in April to June. It's not open in November.

I agree with the others who said go to Sipadan. The diving was AWESOME!!! We had single females on our trip there that walked all around Semporna by themselves with no problems at all! If you are still worried then diving in the Philippines is a great option!

Thanks, everyone. I've decided to stay in Kota Kinabalu and dive the nearby islands like TAR park instead of Sipadan.

I hope you're not coming all the way over here for just the diving. Traveling from the US to go to TARP is like a mountain climber flying to Nepal and to only climb stairs in the hotel.

speaking of mountains, I looked into hiking to the top of Mount Kinabalu, but as a solo non-Malaysian traveler, it's going to cost me $400+. F that.

Ouch. Any chance they can let you join others once you are there. They require each "group" to have a guide but you don't really need to walk with them. Maybe you can join another group. Good luck, it's a good climb although not the best time of the year.

Problem with Sipadan may be insurance. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/malaysia

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to all islands off the coast of eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau, including (but not limited to) Lankayan, Mabul, Pom Pom, Kapalai, Litigan, Sipadan and Mataking.

Many insures won't cover you if you travel against UK Gov advice.

You are coming from Manila? I know people who live in Sabah who won't go to Manila because it is perceived as 'too dangerous'. Maybe that's something to think about.
