Not so hard that it stands up but hard enough to make it difficult to put on.

UsryTregre thanks for that, mine's about 8 years old as well but still in good condition apart from the hardness.

Sorry about hijacking your thread Kat but I was looking for the same answer and rather than start a new thread etc etc

Maybe a good wash with a tiny bit of detergent will do it, then! No dryer, no softner . . .

Also, if you hang it out to dry when the temp is below freezing, that hardness may come back . . . .

Thanks all (esp. KAT) I put it through the washing machine and although it ain't NEW again it is a major improvement.
 
Put it in a tumble-type clothes washer on warm and dry it in a clothes dryer on delicate, low heat.
