Close encounter with HUGE Bull Grey Seal

Unlike young / adolescent males that I often observe, film and interact with, it is rare for a mature bull grey seal to choose to interact with a diver.


This is footage of a large (220kg+) adult bull grey seal that was unusually "interactive"... rather too close for comfort given it's bulk and slightly menacing behaviour.


Please note that underwater grey seals are incredibly gentle. It never attempted to bite with any power, however, these are powerful wild animals that deserve great respect.


(The photos from Jan Haelters interesting research indicating that large adult grey seals can kill porpoise were kept in mind during this encounter!)


Around the UK shores we are incredibly fortunate to have approx. 40% of the worlds population of these rare seals. They certainly deserve our protection.
