..... huh?

Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate.

It's Hell. You don't need to worry about your gear, because in Hell, you're never going to have good enough conditions to dive. You're going to be stuck in the boat all day, and the only movies that they'll have playing while you wait are "Ishtar" and "Heaven's Gate."

In this new year of 2010 I would like to open up the basic discussion Dante and diving to see if the New Year has given you pause to think about humanity and the place of scuba divers in it.

Specifically, this thread is stimulated by the existence of Dale Harry Batt (DOB: 12.19.1962) who is an avid scuba diver, and, according to http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/no...ver-arrest-warrant-dale-batt-please-read.html , a wife-beater and torturer.

My reflections as a diver in this New Year is that I am struck at how well Dante describes Hell for those who are guilty of sins of violence (wife-beating and torture surely qualify) - of Hell's nine circles, the seventh is reserved for those who committed violence against people and property. In this circle, sinners guilty of violence are immersed in Phlegethon, a river of boiling blood, to a level commensurate with their sins. I wonder to myself - what would the implications of Dante's Divine Comedy be for Dale Batt?

I dearly do not want to see this thread relegated to "non-diving related." Thus, in addition to posing a question about humanity and the place of scuba divers in it (and in addition to drawing your attention to Dale Batt), I would like to ask your opinion - If you were diving in the river Phlegethon, what kind of gear would you use? Split fins or jets? A rebreather, or tanks? Doubles, or singles? Air, nitrox, or trimix? A computer, or tables? Why?

MODs - although the question may be hypothetical, it surely deserves the weight and attention that the basic scuba diving forum affords.

Cheers, and happy 2010!

This took a while to formulate, are you off your medication?

Good diving, Craig

No - they changed my medications, though... :)

How about this:

1. In Hell, you will have to fly to get there;
2. You will not be allowed carry-on;
3. Your flight will be delayed, and the aircraft will (be dare I say it?) hot as Hell;
4. Did you request a vegetarian meal? Sorry - we are all out!
5. Your luggage will be lost - this means your dive gear. Looks like you will be in rental Hell. This means, if you are a DIR diver, only split-fins will be available. If you like Spare-Air, the guy at the counter will tell you how you are wasting your money. Oh yes - they will not recognize your certification;
6. Hell is forever. So is your dive buddy, and he/she SUCKS! Also, all the rebreathers will be out on rental, all the time. Only a single tank for you. I hope your air consumption is REALLY good;
7. All the rental drysuits leak;
8. All the rental westuits ride up; and
9. (for the Canadians) they only serve American beer, and it is warm!

Did I miss anything?

It goes with my toe of frog, wool of bat and tongue of dog.

Obvious - after you explained it to me. That one sailed over my head. Good one, though!
