Hey all,

Going to Bonaire in November for a week of diving, and due to flight schedules I need to do an overnight in Curacao (no diving just an overnight).

Anyone got a hotel recommendation? I don't want to spend a ton but it doesn't need to be super-cheap either.

Thanks!
Jon

There's an Airport hotel but I haven't read anything good about it. Curacao Airport Hotel / Small Hotels / Where to Stay / Home - Curacao

The cheaper rooms at the Curacao Hilton in Piscadera Bay will be under $200/nt. Maybe $170? It's an older Hilton and kind of dumpy but for one night it would work. The grounds are nice but others have posted here that the Hotel building itself is old and sort of tired. It looks it - like it was built in the 70's. There's an outdoor bar/grille, a restaurant and a small casino. I ate one night at Aqua at the Hilton - don't recall it being good or bad.

It's probably the closest hotel from the Airport, PBay is south of the Airport - probably $25 for a cab - I don't think they have a shuttle.
Hilton Curacao Hotel - the best of Curacao hotels
What's kind of odd is on their website map, the hotel is nowhere near the "H" - it's slightly farther west - they've got it listed as "swimming pool at the Hilton Resort" but obviously the whole hotel is there. You can also walk over to Pirate Bay - a beach bar just west of there. Near the end of the week they'll have live music. Pirate Bay Curacao | Beach Club Curacao | Hooks Hut Curacao (former)

The Marriott next door will be about $400/nt. It's one of the nicest Marriott's I've been to in case you have reward points.

Other than that - probably something downtown. There's a few local hotels that should be cheaper but it's a farther cab ride also. Here's a list of options: Curacao Hotels- Hotel Reservations- Best Curacao Resorts

Diversteve,

Thanks for the detailed reply. I'd been looking at the Hilton and I think I'll end up there. Seems like a good middle of the road price. No Marriott points and no reason to spend that kind of $$$. Thanks!

Apartamentu Holanda
stayed there in 2011 and it was fine. near airport, would stay there again as I was in transit from Bonaire to US.
you can find info on web or I can post it. another scuba diver turned me on to it and ALLAN the owner is great. from memory i am thinking under $80 a night.

What time are you arriving and departing? Given enough time to do so, I'd consider staying in Willemstad as there'd be more to do for a night. Several fairly inexpensive options there.

I often fly to CUR on AA and then take Divi to Bonaire. On occasion I must overnight in CUR. Typically, I stay at Floris Suites or Kura Hulanda but the 50.00 round trip cab ride PLUS the nightly stay adds up. I decided to try the Airport Hotel recently. First I must preface this by saying my friend was traveling with my daughter and I and she wanted to save money. Ultimately she did not travel but we stayed with the plan. The taxi was 20.00 round trip. The ride is 3 minutes. Upon arrival around 8 PM the entire lobby was reeked like cigarettes. Viewers were watching the news about a murder at the adult entertainment complex nearby. The place was hopping. The front desk clerk was quite nice and accommodating. The room was 85+ for our overnight. Our room was down the hall from the reception. It was next to the parking lot. We did hear the noise outside quite a bit but it was not too bad. Our room was truly bare bones basic. It was clean in initial appearance but looking about it was really not too clean. There were hairs and dirt all about. The curtains were falling off the rod. Outside on the patio was pretty unpleasant;junk. The bedspread was threadbare and pretty gross. We went to take a shower and realized there was not hot water. It was time for a drink. We went to the bar. It was really run down. The bartender was really nice. We wanted white wine. She offered a jug of Carlo Rossi or Gallo Chardonnay. We chose the Gallo (later threw it out) to go in plastic cups. It was 6.00 plus tip. The casino was brightly lit and looked fun if that's your thing. We went to our room, donned flip flops, tossed the bedding on a chair and tried not to touch anything. If you are really seeking bare bones spartan and don't care about the bedding or clean factor, it's the cheapest option. I should say, the mattress was SO old, the coils poked my back all night. There was no wifi or internet either. I would NOT stay here again. The best part were the really pleasant staff.

Floris Suites looked like a nice place (we only ate there) and the rates aren't bad. Might be my first choice for a stopover, especially as it's not a place I would stay otherwise (like if I were on Curacao to vacation & dive.) I got the impression it's more business travelers, it's in same area as the Hilton and Marriott, near the convention center.

You could also look at Lions Dive for a pretty good place at a mid-range price. It's a little further from the airport than the Hilton but not too bad, and there's a lot of stuff right around it. For a night stopover I'd be inclined to ask for a first floor room so I didn't wind up dragging bags to the 3rd floor for one night, IIRC they don't have elevators.

Another place to look into might be the Trupial Inn? Driven past there and don't know anything first hand about it, but on paper it looks like a possibility for a decent/cheap layover place.

I have stayed at Floris Suites 10+ times and Kura Hulanda 10+. Both very nice both 25.00 each way taxi to the airport. Great prices can be found if you ask. If the airport hotel did a huge remodel, it could do very well. The lobby looked bright and promising..too bad the rest was a fail.

All thanks! Just getting back to this thread. For my November trip I stayed at the Hilton... it was just ok (considering the fairly high price). I think we caught them on a bad day though, they seemed terribly understaffed and had some other "issues" related to room assignments and such due to major renovations.

Next trip this Spring/Summer I may definitely try one of the different options listed above.

Thanks!
