Dome ports and depth of field

I have a hypothetical question. What happens when you use a wider lens in a smaller dome port? For example, if I were to just use the 4" Zen dome for the Panasonic 7-14mm lens at 7mm?

using a smaller dome will require you to focus closer on your camera lens, thus resulting in a smaller depth of field. But a wider lens will counter that.
