omg this pissing match is getting totally out of hand. my (I am the OP) original question was specifically about dives with an overhead (virtual or real), and mostly pointed towards dives with a deco obligation. any arguments based on being able to shoot to the surface like a bloody Poseidon missile are therefor null and void.

A lot of things would need to go wrong before you would need ditchable weight in a cave. Both your legs would need to cramp from the cold, at the same time that your wing and your drysuit fail to give you buoyancy. Unlikely, of course, since a triple failure, but still possible.

At the beginning of your dive you are going to be negatively buoyant by the weight of your gas. With doubles that often equals 12 lbs, at least. With leg cramps you would not be able to swim-up 12 lbs.

In the open water with doubles, there are many instances when you might need to ditch your ballast weight. If you are smart, you will not get in the habit of diving without ditchable weight at least equal to your gas weight.

And if you are not smart, then you simply have one more friend that you do not know of, who is the Grim Reaper.:)

In other words, "YOU"RE "GONNA DIE!!!!!!"

Hardly.
