Porn was all on VHS. Seriously though it's not the entire reason Beta lost that battle but it was a contributing factor.

Betamax was Sony. They wouldn't license/sell the rights initially so the other manufacturers worked around the patents and came up with the VHS format which was technologically inferior then dumped them cheap on the market (and where the porn came in :) ). All the TV stations etc. were using Betamax and continued to do so since it was technologically better. By the time Sony decided they were getting their butts handed to them and started licensing it was too late. Market share was VHS and they couldn't catch up, particularly with Laserdisc and CD's coming on the scene. Mine was a HiFi and I used it instead of a reel-to-reel for music along with video. Watching it then going to friends and watching VHS was like watching a new hi def flatscreen TV vs an old analog color set. No comparison.

Back on topic, only real bad currents I've encountered was I believe on Cedral, wickedly fast horizontally and no way to get out. Was a pretty cool dive except I was trying to take pictures and stopping was not really in the cards. Had to get low behind things to really stop but that put me WAY behind the group. Catching up wasn't too bad though, with some kicking I looked like Spitz! (Way before Phelps...)

Ok video player works, and some good video of the bubbles moving fast and in a downward direction with divers finning, sand flying etc. If I could just figure a way to get this to dvd without spending money.

I got to disagree. One may not like it, but forewarned is forearmed.

I agree with you. I guess my original point was kind of sarcastic and i missed my point.

I take the out put of vhs player to input of DVD player/recorder (under $100) at walmart. I did over 50 tapes to convert so $2 per tape conversion plus I still have the unit. Good buy IMO.

I would truly hope that this thread or the one started by Mr. Dillehay would not cause someone to permanently scratch any dive sites off of their list. You'd be missing out on some great dives. There are risks to just about every outdoor, physical activity that's fun or worth doing. Whether it's hiking, skiing, surfing, mounting climbing, skydiving, SCUBA diving, etc. I've had more close calls driving to the store for a root beer and a frozen burrito, than I have diving. For that matter, I've had scarier close calls driving than the downwelling experience. Like DandyDon said "Forewarned is forearmed". So, now you know and you'll be that much more prepared if it happens.:D

Thats why I started the thread, education. NOT fear mongering. There are thousands of divers that are not on this forum that dive at Coz, maybe we can advertize where we found the topic while discussing it on the boat.:D

I totally agree.... but it is important that all these newbies understand that it can and does happen.

Scariest dive I ever did in Coz was at Paseo de Cedral (a site we always do in Coz and never had any problems). This time it was ripping current, really out of control speed, we had to duck behind coral heads over and over in order to stay together as a group. We were all okay, no downwell or issues of that sort but my daughter was totally freaked out and grabbed her dad and rode his back most of the dive. Biggest concern was getting separated or hitting a coral head! :shocked2: I would still do that dive again in a heartbeat.

True dat!!! And I thank Firstdive (in fact I should probably go hit that thanks button) for bringing the topic back-up. I'm often asked by people, simply because I live in Cozumel, what my advice about diving there is. I tell them the usual; be honest with and listen to the DM, remember your training, try not to fight the current if you don't have to, don't try and pet the eels, and the most important ones-beware the black fern looking plants and don't do what I do. . . etc-etc. But, I've never once thought to mention the down current issue. I may now. :coffee:

I had the same experience my 1st trip to Cozumel 10 years ago. We hit the water and it was like a ricket taking off. I wasn't scared, and really enjoyed the ride. I still consider it one of my favorite dives, and would absolutely do it again even though I didn't see much of the sea life on that dive. :D
