Ears... Yep clearing is probably the #1 problem for newer divers. But, it does get better. I am an example. Clearing was my major problem when I started diving. However, an ENT doc and some research paid off for me. It is all about learning an effective technique that works for you and relaxing. The technique that worked best for me is:
1. put you tongue on the roof of your mouth (mouth closed around the reg)
2. pinch your nose
3. Look up
4. swallow.
Try this now. Do you feel your ears clear? If so, this should work for you. I like it better than the Valsalva as I always had trouble guessing just how hard to blow. This is a more measured process. Do this early prior to and with every breath as you descend. If one ear is not clearing well, point that ear to the surface as you use this method. It is also all about relaxing. If your neck muscles are tense, you will have problems.
