Diver rescued at Edmonds Underwater Dive Park Thursday

Posted: March 16, 2023
A man was rescued at the Underwater Dive Park off Edmonds’ Brackett’s Landing Thursday morning after experiencing some technical issues during a dive, Edmonds police said.
According to police spokesperson Commander Shane Hawley, at 10:41 a.m., the diver “suffered some technical/equipment issues and had to surface quickly.”
While the diver was able to surface, he couldn’t make it back to shore, Hawley said. A Washington State ferry on the Edmonds-Kingston run launched a rescue boat and brought the victim to shore, where he was evaluated by an aid crew.

IIRC solo diving is Gantz Verboten in the Edmonds dive park. He may have a lot of ‘splanin to do

That is correct if you are not Bruce Higgins.
EUP is a long surface swim. It is very shallow, max depth of 40 feet. There can be currents, so people need to pay attention to those or they may drift into the ferry lane.

For those who may not know, Bruce Higgins (my ol’ dive buddy from college) built Edmonds Underwater Park, and usually dives with a group of people each Saturday. If it were not for Bruce, there would be no Edmonds Underwater Park, or the maps, the submerged trails, the features, nor the boats that he has sunk there to provide artificial reefs over the time since he started in the late 1970s.

PS, I added four photos, one of the oil dock at Edmonds, and the other showing Bruce (on the right) talking about his work at the Edmonds Underwater Park during a Northwest History of Diving meeting with Tom Hemphill (left). The other photo shows Bruce with a set of doubles he donated as part of a fundraiser for the organization. The other photo shows Bruce and Tom giving Mike herrion an award for his efforts in diving. This was in October of 2018.
