Interesting. I was V.P. of the Catalina Conservancy which owns 88% of the island and have never heard that place name. Neither have the dive ops here. Guess next time I dive the mainland I'll just rename the site Bushing's Bay!

Since Carlos, myself, and other un-named dive-site-renamers visit catalina much more often than you visit the mainland (once every couple years????), I think our names will win out over yours everywhere! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha (evil laugh)

Scott

btw, nice article on the Scythe butterflyfish

Hey Scott, what do you mean by that? Why I've done at least... er, um... 5 mainland dives in the last 6 months! That makes 6 in the last 37 years!!

DrBill...thanks for the link...

The dive spot (African Cove) was probably named because somebody (Diver #1)said: "Wow! was it hot down there!" Diver #2 said: "How hot was it?" Diver #1 responded: "It was African Hot."

Like I said...it seems to always have the warmest waters on Catalina...

So, yes, go ahead and name your bay "Bushing Bay." :shakehead

Again thanks for your link...

Hi Carlos. I've seen a Finescale Triggerfish at Marineland. Last week I saw a fish that resembles a yellowfin goatfish and found it to be an Ocean Whitefish.

Phil,

How can you mistake a goatfish for a whitefish? The telltail trademark of a goatfish is the barbels

See here: http://www.mexfish.com/fish/mgoat/mgoat.htm for dead ones
and here: http://www.pbase.com/dave_clausen/image/60273120 for live ones

Youknow I am messing with you, right :blinking:

I remember the first time I saw this kind of fish off La Paz, MX. There were about 50 of them, with their barbels digging in the sand. I hovered watching them for about 5 minutes. It was so strange, the way they picked through the sand with what looked like a mustache. :eyebrow:
