Montana Mike:
Hi

I am new to this forum.

I own a golf ball recovery route in the Western United States, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Nevada, California.

The advantages of this business, I work when I want, I make as much money as I am willing to work for, I work for myself.

Disadvantages - zero visability most of the time - who knows what chemicals are in the water (chemicals are everywhere - in all waters - I have been doing this for 15 years).

Interested?

Um, well, you make it sound so appealing.....:D
Hiya Montana Mike, welcome to SB! Lots of golf courses in Florida too.... lemme know if you ever decide to expand. We should put our heads together and design a machine for that...... I'm thinkin' DPV with some kind of vaccumming device on it, maybe? Oversize pool cleaning attachment? Don't laugh too hard, anything's possible!

The "water" in most all water traps can be incredibly contaminated - the large amount of fertilizer used on the courses aid the growth of a wide range of micro-critters, not to mention the high level of chemicals could have unprotected skin looking like a 10 year old salami that's been hiding in the back of the fridge.
Drysuits & FFMs [at least] are the preferred "uniform of the day".
Did I mention that there's a drysuit sale going on now?

Another welcome to ScubaBoard from Ohio.

Go BUCKS!!

I can sell the rights to the courses to get pond balls or I can hire divers to get the golf balls out.

Getting the rights to get pond balls from courses is the key. Ask!

Selling golf balls takes some know how. Knowing which companies to ship to and the value of different types of golf balls is knowledge. A batch of pond balls wholesales out for between .15 to .22 per ball. Work off that figure when hiring divers and paying courses for the diving rights. Giving the course back about 20% of the balls for the dive rights works for some courses.

Golf course ponds fill up with golf balls to make diving for golf balls cost effective every 2/3 months.

If a person has about 30 courses, they can gross around $ 100,000.00 a year, depending on several factors - weather - pond locations.

How hard one works and how often depends on the diver.

A normal work day should be between 3,000 and 5,000 golf balls - do the math and see what you think you can make.

Hobby? Subsidize income? or Full time job?

So, you are effectively employing divers to dive in contaminated wates ? .... do you provide insurance and long term disability benefits ?

What a great idea, employing people to dive in contaminated waters and forcing someone to supply insurance. (like diving the Oceans and any lake in America is not contaminated)

To ask a question about employing people who dive in contaminated waters, ONE must work for the government and expect that no individual is responsible for their own actions (a trained employee mentality) decisions.

Divers that go into golf course ponds, do not have a gun put to their heads, it is by their choice and those divers work as Independent Contractors. Work when you want, quit when you want.

Remember way back in the old days - before Amerika became what it is today, America was based on the INDIVIDUALS RIGHT TO CHOOSE- not a government controlled country, where government must be a cure for all -

In America today, one must ask Big Brother if it is ok to do anything in America and get your licenses/insurances and bring a lobbyist. What a mentality!

Independent Business's (entrpreneurs) no longer have the ability to function in America, because the LEACHES that work for the government, are sucking so much income out of privately owned Independent business for Licenses and Insurance that one can not afford to go into business.

Hmmmm, sounds socialist, not capitalist.

Pond Divers are Indepenent Contractors and piece workers - like Hispanic labor in the farm communities.

So why do we need you to dive for to get golf balls???

Why not just make the agreement with our local golf course?

In other thoughts... why not make Golf Pro Shops into Dive Shops also? (Kinda makes sense right as they are both expensive sports with a select crowd?....) BTW... We'll be teaching Open Water certification in the pond on hole #3 this weekend. If you students hear "FORE" then it's time to submerge, quickly!.
