Annapolis Project Update

February 23, 2013

Dear Friends,

As some or many of you may know, the project is under a review by Environment Canada (EC) over a possible contaminant that maybe associated with the insulation of the ship. However, we simply do not know if this is a real concern or not as there are apparently no records available to tell us. Since this is an environmental question of importance, it must be determined through sample gathering and stringent lab testing by the federal government.

Currently under the standards for vessel clean up, the removal of insulation is not required. These standards are set by Environment Canada which we must abide by.

The preliminary sample collection has been completed however, as of this date, not all their results are back. At some point in the coming weeks, we expect to know more on what steps will follow in this process, but at this point no definitive information is available to us until all the results are in and it is known whether or not more samples may be needed.

We had hoped to sink the ship late last year and were on schedule for our final inspection before this matter was brought to the attention of the government by critics of the project, so we hope you understand that the ARSBC is locked into a process that must run its course. With the known environmental cleanup work done and with the bulk of salvage cleared from the ship what remains are house keeping tasks to keep the ship ready for final inspection.

While we may not know the outcome as yet we ask that you remain patient until we have more specific information that we can confidently share. Thank you once again for your continued support and we will try to keep you informed as best as possible.

Thank you,

Howie Robins
President, ARSBC

Why don't they just remove that which may be in question? I know there is a cost to it, but in the end, better safe than sorry.
