The Our World-Underwater Dive & Travel Expo has announced that well-known cave explorer and filmmaker Jill Heinerth is being honored with the Our World-Underwater Outstanding Achievement Award. The annual award will be presented during the Our World-Underwater Dive & Travel Expo February 15-17 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL, just outside of Chicago.
The annual Our World-Underwater event is one of the largest scuba diving events in the country attracting thousands of scuba diving enthusiasts to Chicago despite often frigid temperatures. The show annually recognizes individuals who have made important contributions to the dive industry.
“We are pleased to be recognizing Jill for her many accomplishments and contributions to the dive industry,” said Patrick Hammer, co-Chairman of the Our World-Underwater event.
Heinerth has dove deeper into caves than any other woman in history. As an award winning filmmaker she has worked from the iceberg caves of Antarctic to the Florida Aquifer and to subterranean Siberia. She has received scores of awards for her photography and filmmaking. Hollywood filmmakers like James Cameron have called upon her to produce difficult underwater scenes.
Heinerth will debut her new work We Are Water at the Show's Saturday Evening Film Festival. We Are Water is a continuation of Jill’s award-winning PBS documentary series Water’s Journey that she wrote, produced and appeared in.
The OW-U Outstanding Achievement Award dates back to 1971 and honors those divers whose life work has advanced and promoted diving. Past award winners include such legendary figures as the Cousteaus, Al Giddings, Dr. Sylvia Earle and Stan Waterman.
