The below letter is from CAPT Kyaa Heller and was posted to the KTLA morning News FB page yesterday regarding the mako caught off LA. Please feel free to comment - please keep it cordial. - DM Jim

Here is the letter I just posted on the KT...LA Morning News FB Page. Feel free to copy, paste, borrow language as you like. You can also call them at 323-460-5404. Let's give them some feedback!

Re: News Story - Possible World-Record Shark Caught Off SoCal, Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Dear KTLA Morning News:
...
I was caught this morning in the middle of an exercise program at my gym and thus forced to endure your disgustingly lengthy coverage about the “monster shark” caught off our Huntington Beach coastline yesterday, reported by Eric Spillman. Why KTLA deemed this story worthy of 2 minutes and 47 seconds of screen time with zero time given to education or local conservation efforts is beyond me. Mr. Spillman’s mild sarcasm towards the end of the story hardly negates KTLA’s obvious and deeply ignorant celebration of yesterday’s recreational fishing trip that destroyed the amazing animal at the heart of this news piece.

One of the three fishermen involved in hooking and killing the short fin Mako refers to it in your story as a swimming nightmare. You should know that pelagic sharks are such a “nightmare” that little, tiny women divers routinely swim in chummed waters with any and every shark they can find in order to add a single photograph to their portfolios. We are FINALLY this year seeing a positive uptick in the pelagic shark population off our coastline, along with unheard of Orca appearances, and all KTLA can manage to do is glorify the rape and pillage fishing activities that are currently stripping our oceans of irreplaceable living treasures.

As a dual industry professional in the marine venue, I am appalled at such narrow-minded, fear-based, childish reporting. Should you wish to remedy your base, ridiculous one-sided “journalism”, I would refer you to Captain Chris Wade, (562) 305-9568, and Sea Watch, the local shark boat operation that is in the business of understanding and celebrating sharks instead of destroying them. (See https://www.facebook.com/SharkBoat?fref=ts).

Sincerely,
Captain K. Heller

All, Please see the attached from Samantha Whitcraft - Action is needed to ensure protections put in place are not removed or altered in a negative manner. - DM Jim

I don't share petitions unless I know that they are 1) actionable and 2) useful and 3) can make a difference. This one IS all three: U.S. States' Shark Fin Bans under threat by Federal Government: "The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin...istration [NOAA-National Marine Fisheries Service] is proposing a rule that...has the potential to overturn the shark protections [i.e. shark fin bans] passed by California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Oregon, Washington state, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Implementing the provisions of The [2010, National] Shark Conservation Act should NOT be used to overturn state laws that are more protective than federal law.

Regulations [i.e. shark fin bans] by the states and territories to protect sharks are NOT in conflict with federal law. The U.S. government should implement the Shark Conservation Act as intended, without undermining state conservation measures."

PLEASE sign and share the attached Pew Environment Group petition on this important issue: https://secure3.convio.net/pew/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1748
