Les, the DIR position for the canister is on the right waistbelt with the lighthead held primarily by the left hand. There are several reasons for this. Having the canister on the right means that it will not interfer with the left waist D-ring where the SPG is clipped off as well as the bottom of your deco/stage bottles are clipped off.

Not that it matters anymore with the HID lights, but it was also so that you could dump your light if you needed to ditch weight... without removing the buckle from your waistband.
