I am currently in San Pedro and thinking about coming to stay here for a while. I have been trying to get info from locals without much success. I am hoping that some divers living there will see this and help me out. My question is this: if you are living on the caye and want to dive, can you just dive or do you still need a "tour guide" with you. Can you take a boat out to the reef and either anchor or tie off to a buoy and dive? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Gary

Carlos is right, that you need a work permit or residency to show the ranger (mostly at Hol chan) As for a boat and more importantly you will need a captain's license to operate a boat.(you will get stopped and checked for a captain license) People do not tie up to the mooring buoys without a captain as others might want to us that site to dive. It is best to leave a captain aboard the boat.
