I don't mean to hijack your thread bcadden, but I'm in a very similar situation, except we're not particularly thrilled with the idea of an all inclusive. We've never tried an AI. Being the food freaks that we are, we like to try different things all the time, not eat at the same old buffet every day.
We were considering Breezes in Curacao because I've read good things about it, except for that all inclusive food thing.
What I'm looking for is a nice resort within walking distance of town (shopping, eats and nightlife), and shore diving. My non-diving wife hates it when we're in a foreign country, and I leave her alone for four hours while I go out on a boat and dive. She likes Cozumel, and I absolutely love it, but she just couldn't go anywhere downtown without being hit on by the local playboys. It's funny, but when I'm with her, no one hits on her at all, but if she's by herself, the local playboys are constantly bugging her. Lots of false bravado with those guys.
Ideally, I'd like to find a place where I can do a nice relaxing shore dive before breakfast right at the resort, then go eat breakfast some place close, and then escort her all over the place to do her shopping and touristy things for the rest of the day. I'd also like to be situated close to town so I can avoid unnecessary taxi fares.
Any place in Curacao like that?
And about Bonaire. I've always gotten the impression that yes, it has the best shore diving around, but no, it doesn't have any nightlife. Do I have the wrong impression?
In Curacao, there are a variety of places to stay downtown, where you can walk to lots of shopping, restaurants, casinos, sightseeing - but none with shore diving on site. If I were to stay downtown my choice would probably be Hotel Kura Hulanda. (Like most downtown hotels no beach, but they will shuttle you to their beach club, don't think there's diving there though.) Your wife might find enough to do between the beach club and the hotel property to allow you to head elsewhere for a few dives - the hotel is really a semi-enclosed bit of downtown that was restored with pools, gardens, shops, museums, restaurants, quite unique. She may even feel ok with leaving the hotel to explore parts of downtown herself from there.

There's a few places with shore diving of various quality that are pretty close to town, but not walking distance. Marriott, Breezes, Lion's Dive come to mind first but there's a few others. I would choose the Marriott out of these. (I've not stayed there but visited a number of times, nice resort and from most reports a decent shore dive and dive op. The Hilton is nearby but I think the Marriott is much nicer.) On the other side of town, I've stayed at Lion's Dive and didn't like the shore diving there, but at least it's an option. But if you stay at Lions Dive, Breezes, or the Seaquarium Resort (timeshare) you can walk between them, the Aquarium, and a few restaurants in the area, it's definitely not isolated, lots of activity.

The taxi fares should not be bad from these near-town places (especially in the grand scheme of the cost of a whole trip.) I think some places may have some sort of shuttle. Renting a car would be useful though, so you can go downtown when you want, see the island, visit remote beaches, whatever. It's generally a pretty decent place to drive once you get your bearings and fun to explore, just watch out for the usual Carribean hazards like potholes and goats.

The places with the best shore diving on site (and access to the best boat diving) such as Habitat or Sunset, and possibly Lodge Kura Hulanda, are a distance away from town. You'd probably want to rent a car, you definitely don't want to cab it from out there. AFAIK they do all have shuttles of some sort to downtown but they may not always be at the best times for you. I haven't gone to Lodge Kura Hulanda which is relatively new and way out towards the west end. But they are a sister property to Hotel Kura Hulanda downtown. This might be something for you to look into, split the trip between the 2 places and dive mostly when you are at the Lodge.

Thanks for your really excellent sumation Damselfish!
I've been researching your suggestions and I'm thinking about staying at the Marriot.
OTOH, it turns out that my employer's dive club is sponsering a trip there for seven days in October. They'll be staying at the Sunset Waters resort about a half hour away from town.
They say October is when the corals spawn. I've never seen that before and it sounds real interesting. Heck, I've never even done a night dive yet.
It looks to be a nice resort according to their website: http://www.sunsetwaters.com/intro.html.
Have you been there? The web site says there's even a section for 'au naturale sun bathing, but that ain't gonna happen around people I work with.:11:
I haven't contacted the club yet (not a member), but I'm hoping that there will be at least one other non-diving wife my wife can hang with while I'm down. I might even rent a car so we can go into town a couple times.

I haven't stayed at Sunset Waters, only stopped at their dock and wandered around some on SIs. (Habitat refuels there, or at least used to.) But a fair number of people on this board have and written reviews.

Divi Flamingo at Bonaire has a special right now that includes meals (or just breakfast buffet). You can walk to town. It has a casino on the grounds. The dive dock is open and full of tanks 24/7--just jump in. Plus they have 5 boats with trips every day. Has a spa,etc for the nondiver. What's not to like!?
