Hi all, a friend and I are considering taking diving lessons. We live in LaMirada. Any good dive shops in the area? I found one in Huntington Beach called "Ocean Gear". Any good/bad experiences with them? Thanks

I have never heard of Ocean Gear, so cannot comment on that store. Scuba Toys is located in Cypress and I have heard very good things about them.

Hollywood divers is another good store.

I got my PADI Open Water certification from Sport Chalet in Huntington Beach. There are plenty of shops around, that others will probably mention. Whatever shop you pick, make sure you continue to dive after getting certified. Also, research gear options before buying. I wish I did more of this as most of my original gear has been sold on ebay. Best of luck with your decision.

Pacific Wilderness and Laguna Sea Sports are also well regarded. Pac Wild has a store in Orange. Laguna Sea Sports is obviously in Laguna Beach. It is within walking distance of Shaws Cove where a lot of stores do their ocean training. Call the stores and find out how they handle the classroom, pool and ocean training segments. Having to make weeknight classroom sessions at the closest store may not be as convenient as weekend sessions at a store further away. Pick the store that works best for your schedule. You will get good training at any of these stores.

or check out the diving instructor list at ocdiving.com there are several excellent instructors who teach privately and/or affiliated with shops. I am booked solid, otherwise I would PM ya

I too would rec Pacific Wilderness in Orange or San Pedro Location. Roger is the manager for the store in Orange and is a very good instructor! http://www.PacificWilderness.com

Or, if you are pressed for time and want good quality instruction, I would highly rec Reefseekers http://www.Reefseekers.com They have an excellent accelerated program or a variety of class schedules that would better fit your needs.

In any case, check them out. Check all the shops out, and weigh the pros and cons that work for you.

Best of luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of Scuba Diving.

Once you're certified, check out http://www.southcoastdivers.com It's a weekly dive group that meets and dives Laguna. Great group to get beach diving experience!
