For jumps, bag shooting, and as a safety, a spool is recommended because of its simplicity. A spool is all that's needed. Now going from the Eye to the Ear would definetly require a reel. Its all about how the item is going to be used.

Manta reels might not be the best choice because they are quite complex when compared to other types on the market. As Matt pointed out, Halcyon, Dive Rite and Salvo all make excellent side handle reels with close tolerances to prevent line trapping.
 
I've used the Salvo for above ground practice. Seemed very nice. I was just curious about these.
 
I use a Halcyon pathfinder reel and it is excellent. Very easy to control tension and simple, well made design.
