Dr Bill, Nejat Ezal was a grad student at UCSB who passed away while diving Catalina, I don't remember the exact consequences of his death but there is a fellowship at UCSB in his name now. He passed away April 23, 1994.

Thanks. Some time after I posted here I decided to write one of my newspaper columns on some of the memorial plaques in the Casino Point Dive Park so I did find out who he was.

Interesting thing is that I was doing my Ph.D. research at UCSB when he died and wasn't even aware of it... or at least not that I can remember.

Some day I hope my friends will plant a plaque for me... perhaps in another 50 years when I die at the hands of a jealous husband, or in a dive-related incident at age 108!

Pulled a couple of Urchins off of it back on January's Mo2vation dive from the Peace, with Headhunter, on January 28th, 2006. Been around that rock a dozen times, floored me when we saw it. Sad to see the brittle stars take over the other side.
They mentioned that it had been there for a couple of years when we asked about it.

I imagine that it was probably put down there in 2002 when the death occurred.

There was a huge star fish with 21 arms (if I remember correctly after counting them) just about this "tombstone".
