Whatever methods you choose keep in mind that some airline personnel may elect to weigh your carry-on items. I found the secret to not stand out with the size and type of your carry-on items. When I used a Pelican type hard case for my carry-on camera gear it drew their attention and they weighed it and of course it was over the limit. Hard cases eat up weight restrictions when empty. I now use a backpack for my laptop and a few other items and a small soft case for all my camera gear. I have not been challenged by any airline personnel with it. I check in all my scuba gear in one bag and my clothes in another. I pad my regulator and mask. My dive computer is a wrist mount so it goes with the camera gear as carry-on.
