Newbie needs help

Just got back from my trip. As far as photos go...well let's just say I won't quit my day job for u/w photo career....lol. Problems that I had were:
1) Auto mode doesn't mean good pictures.
2) White sand w/strobe on auto=a lot of pictures of a snow blizzard.
3) None of macro stuff turned out
4) surge+1 second shutter delay=blurry photos.
5) best shots were from 2-6 foot range.
6) alot of fish butts

Thanks again for everyone's help. Enjoyed my trip, and despite the problems that I had, I did manage some ok shots to remember the trip by.
 
"White Balance" if there is an adjustment for white balance, follow the instructions in the users manual. If the white balance is adjustable, meaning "not automatic", then get a "white" board at your local LDS, or you can use the sand at the bottom if it is white. Anything white will work. You will find your pics will be more successful.
