The other problem is that the models turn over so quickly that most competent photographers are using equipment that is obsolete and can't really give good advise on currently available stuff. Whew.

That is a very good point. The good news is that as new models come out, proven models appear on the used market. That is a good place for a beginner to go to get started. Just be sure that you are buying from someone honest.
