In 3 weeks we will be off to our next Indonesia trip and some part of it is exploring Ternate and Halmahera topside and underwater. Beside the Weda resort and some liveaboard reviews I could not find much (newly dated ) information about diving in this area. Has anybody dived there with a landbased operator ?? Any hints to topside highlights are appreciated as well.
Thanks a lot

Peter

Dove Ternate and Jailolo with Nasijaha (link below) earlier this year. Excellent guides, and local shore diving right in town is good for macro, particularly nudis. Manager Adit I'm sure is knowledgeable about options throughout Halmahera. Can't help with any info on topside attractions as was just there diving. If you have any specific questions, feel free to pm.

Weda Resort, Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia, welcomes you to come Diving, Snorkeling, Kayaking and Birding at Halmahera. Dive and snorkel in the Heart of the Coral Triangle, with its amazing diversity of underwater-life. Explore the forested coast and rivers by kayak. Be part of the dance of the Wallace’s Standard Wing Bird of Paradise and be astonished by the beauty of the other endemic tropical birds. Weda reef and rainforest Resort, on the east coast of Central Halmahera is situated exactly between Lembeh Strait and the Raja Ampat islands.
By staying at our Eco resort you contribute directly to the conservation of the forest and reefs and the development of the local communities of Sawai Itepo and Kobe Village. Please visit Sawai Eco-tourism Foundation and Vision about Eco tourism for more information. Eco tourism does not have to mean “uncomfortable”. Our beds and bathrooms, for example, easily meet the standard of any international hotel. Scuba Diver Australasia elected Weda Resort in 2015 as one of the top sixteen eco resorts in the Asian Pacific region. Full board accommodation rates start from IDR 975.000/EUR 65, -*/USD 72, -.* per night/person.
Until recent, Weda Bay was an unknown spot on the dive map of the world. Now 90% of our guests, many of whom dived in several other places in Indonesia, including Raja Ampat and Wakatobi, think it was their best diving and snorkeling ever! Our three boats are fast and comfortable. In this way we can cover a diving area greater than Bunaken National Park. Apart from the coastal reefs and the many beautiful reefs within 5 kilometers from the resort, there are many reefs about 10 kilometers out of the shore. The furthest reefs we visit are 28 kilometers East of the resort, and to the South we go as far as 35 kilometers (1 hour trip, one way). Weda offers easy diving with hardly any current, along steep drop-offs with caverns and schools of fish, coral covered slopes, perfect shallow reef tops, bays with seahorses and other critters, and for the adventurous diver, an underwater mountain with “big stuff” and a Japanese shipwreck.

Any updates on Ternate/Halmahera? I just tried to book with Weda and they are full - coming from Bangka, where we will be between 10 and 28 Sept (not that whole time) and looking for another place to go. Halmahera sounded great... have also considered Una Una in the Togeans, and had Bira recommended to me. Any thoughts/advice here? Thanks!

From Manado, there's not that much dfference in time or cost to fly to Sorong. From there you have access to a bunch of Dampier Strait resorts. Granted, it's just a piece of Raja Ampat, but it's a pretty nice piece. Having done two liveaboards in RA previously, we didn't get bored spending two weeks diving from a land base there.
