SAN DIEGO -- Searchers recovered the body of a 54-year-old man who became separated from his partner during a recreational dive offshore from Point Loma Sunday.

Diver Bruce Kemp told authorities that he and the victim, whose name was being withheld until relatives could be notified, were on a morning recreational dive. The visibility was poor, and just before Kemp headed for the surface, he lost sight of his friend.

"I stopped to take a picture, we were actually on the way back up," Kemp told NBC 7/39. "You don't have to get too far off before you just completely lose track of who's with you."

When his friend failed to surface, Kemp contacted authorities. San Diego Lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard began searching the area at about 1 p.m. Several hours later, they found the missing diver.

"We located the diver in about 90 feet of water," lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma said. "There were no entanglement issues. We did note that he was out of air. We did our investigation and brought him to the surface."

The San Diego Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of the man's death.
