I made those trips to Punta Molas in my old CJ5 4WD. I would never attempt it in a 2WD, but many people have.

I once gave a lift back to town to couple of tourists I found just short of the finish line at Mezcalitos. They had made it almost to Punta Molas, but turned around and on the way back their oil pan was punctured, the oil drained away and the engine fried. Of course, their rental insurance was voided and they had to stay on Cozumel until they sorted it all out. ($$$$!)
