Dive accident today at Ginnie Springs. An older diver was found unconscious at the surface today coming out of Devils Eye. CPR was administered until EMS arrived but he never regained consciousness.

Don't know many details but sad day.

Not a lot of details. Here's what I know. They were at the end of the dive. Had completed the deco stop. After that, got separated from his buddy. He was found floating in the river. No obvious equipment failure but that's just speculation at this time.

Can anyone confirm this? I have not seen any comments on CDF or TDS.

    Thanks.

yes, no postings on other forums but an accident occurred. I'm sure details will be forthcoming as Ginnie is fairly busy this time of year.

I spoke with someone who got information from an individual who was on site, so I can confirm it. I have no knowledge of if family has been notified, so I'll withhold any further posting of the name or other information. Some postings on other forums already have incorrect information.

How odd that this has not made any of the news services.

Given the ability of the media to contort the facts, that may be a blessing.

How about all the conflicting reports. 1. incident happened while diver was doing deco & found floating in the river. 2. Diver "blew off" deco & collapsed on shore. Is the evidence pointing towards diver error or possible medical issue? Other than the initial reports there's been nothing.

That being said, I've read this in a couple different forums & don't remember what was said in what forum, but some clarity would be nice.

Diver left his buddy during deco, he was not solo. I can't comment as to where he was found (collapsed on shore or floating in the river) as I have not personally verified that and don't want to spread misinformation like the fellow who posted on CDF did. The diver was in his late 60's.

Thanks, James. It doesn't help for lessons learned. Did he leave deco because he felt ill, making this a medical issue? Did he blow off deco for some reason, making this a bad-decision issue? Were the two combined?

Did the diver die, or is he in the hospital?

I cannot speak for others; for me, I run scenarios through my head in these situations, and that internalizes and ingrains a thought process for "if I am ever there . . ."

I don't think we'll ever know what was going on in his head. Considering even commercial divers are given up to 5min to reach a chamber at the surface, I would feel safe saying that blowing off the deco wasn't the cause here. Something else was wrong.

Side question - is this gag on the news (reference this incident) 'normal' for Ginnie Springs?

Every other incident at least has news stories, incorrect as they often are.

    Jax,

Have you googled this? I think you could answer your own question.
    Clicky

There's dozens of pages on cave diving deaths at Ginnie Springs.

Yes, actually - I find nothing dated later than 2008. Caveat -- we have tight search restrictions. For example, tinyurl.com is blocked.

The only other one I remember was an incident by a solo diver deemed medical related around 200ft back in the cave.
