So does that mean one can get away with a teeny-weeny wing in cold water? (Assume single tank diving)
Not a teenie-weeny BC, but you could "get away" with smaller ... yes.
 
DA's post is spot on - read it at least twice.

And not to repeat what everyone else is saying - 5mm is way too little rubber - if you do the wrecks you are looking at water in the high 50's with possible thermoclines at depth. Brrrrrrrrrr

I use a 7mm w/ a hood for winter diving in South FL, w/ temps 68 - 73 and I'm often cold on the 2nd dive - you would think w/ the natural padding I carry that would be plenty, but it does not work that way.
