I have an upcoming trip from Male to Kooddoo and wondering about camera and dive gear packing. Looks like standard baggage is 20Kg and carry-on is 5kg. Any recent experiences with weight checks etc?

Does your ticket say 20kg ? On our several trips it has always been 25kgs on our tickets.We had 24 and had to point this out to the checkin person.
I cannot ever remember having my hand luggage weighed.

Male to the south can be quite strict on hand carry as they use a small plane. Also, the overhead luggage compartment may not be able to accommodate standard international hand carry baggage. Be prepared to have the 5kg hand carry limit enforced, especially if the flight is full.
