When Kuwait blew up I already had my retirement date. I called the detailer and offered to join any attack squadron over there.
"You're too friggin' old, Commander; we already have too many pilots."
When the Towers got hit I called again, this time with the offer to man any desk that was keeping any young fire-breather from doing what he's trained to do instead of flying a desk.
"Thanks Commander, we'll call you if we need you."
