As mentioned earlier, Media Luna is not to be confused with a full-fledged dive resort. It is a resort that caters to vacationers, but the owners recognize the attraction of the pristine reef environment to scuba divers and have contracted with Aqua Adventures to provide on-site dive operations.

For those divers with spouses or families who don't dive, the resort provides a viable alternative to the hardcore dive resorts that operate on the island. There are many ways for visitors to keep themselves occupied without diving. Personally, we have settled into a routine of requesting bungalows right next to the dive shop and we just spend most of our time on that side of things. So we don't get in the way of the water aerobics or pool volleyball games or other fun activities that are conducted at the pool and reception areas. At meal times, we stroll up to the restaurant and hang out for a while. There's an open bar on the huge back deck overlooking the bay and Caribbean beyond. It's a great place to enjoy included wine or cocktails and enjoy an amazing sunset before dinner.

There are shows each evening at 8:30. Most people stick around to watch and participate. I usually make it a point to leave before the show starts so I can get back to the bungalow and make sure the day's photos are downloaded and the batteries are all charged and ready for the next day's dives. Yep...I'm a REAL party animal

Speaking of the bungalows, they are pretty comfortable. Each is its own little building - you are not connected to other rooms. (Unless you have a "suite", which is adjoining rooms that can accommodate a family) They are furnished with either two queens or one king bed, a closet, safe, refrigerator, television, bathroom with rain shower, two sinks, toilet and bidet, and a patio with table, chairs and a hammock. Here's what they look like:

I am unable to upload any more images to this post, so I will continue with photos of the boats and dive shop in the next post...to be continued

I was informed by Jesus that we will be able to dive out of Media Luna a couple of mornings.

Now for the important part...the diving!

Aqua Adventures offers three boat dives per day. Our package also included unlimited shore diving. There are single dives, two-dive trips, daily packages, 10-dive packages and 15-dive packages. We have never participated in anything but the maximum # of dives available - the more the better. Nitrox is also available as a package or individual tanks. There has never been a request that was too much to ask. I have always found the dive staff to be willing to help in any way possible. Any time we want to take in a shore dive, a nitrox tank is set in place for us and we are good to go. A simple request is all it takes. If you want to dive after the shop is closed or before they open, simply make arrangements with them and you will have the tanks you desire.

The first morning boat trip departs at 9:00. Most of the dive sites are very near. I guess Mary's Place is about the farthest we traveled and it was about a 20 minute boat ride. The whole week I only had 1 or 2 boat dives less than an hour in length. My longest was 75 minutes. Our divemaster, Daren Jr, had eagle eyes and was adept at finding lots of small critters. We discovered something I have never seen before. It turned out to be a worm of some type. Lots of underwater high-fives on that one! If the dive site is near the resort, the boat goes back to the dock for the surface interval. During our week of diving, we mostly cruised around and checked out the various harbor areas for an hour between dives. The 2nd dive was usually around 11:00 and we were back at the resort by around 12:30. There was plenty of time to enjoy lunch and a short nap (or downloading of pictures and changing of batteries ) before meeting at the boat again around 2:15 for a 2:30 departure. I can honestly say that once my dive gear was taken to the boat each morning, I never touched it again until it was time to rinse everything and hang it to dry for the night. The staff escorted each of us to the back of the boat and helped us off the boat for each dive. They were waiting to assist us back onto the boat when we finished. They escorted us back to our designated seats on the boat. They changed our gear over to a fresh tank and did the whole procedure over again. And we had LOTS of fun during all of the above. Really a GREAT bunch of guys. Here are the dive op pictures I have:

We have enjoyed numerous dives with these folks. I have learned that I can trust them to give us the BEST possible diving experiences available given the conditions. Who can ask for anything more?

Each person is different and has different likes and dislikes. We thrive on nature and natural beauty. Media Luna is like an ecological preserve. The bungalows are built to look rustic and blend into the natural surroundings, yet they provide a very comfortable environment for a vacation interlude. For us, it's the perfect scenario. When combined with the excellent dive opportunities available with Aqua Adventures, it's everything we could hope for in a dive vacation.

Lucky you! Tell him to call Daren and get the latest information about where to locate the seahorse and frogfish! I can't wait to hear all about your trip :D

In the Ocean?

I'm thinking he was right in the small cove formed by Media Luna's iron shore peninsula. They love shallow areas with rubble bottoms.

You are right. I forgot...they DID see an octopus there on the night dive. But I am afraid of the dark and was not with them :shakehead:

Media Luna has a doable shore dive. Are tanks available for that? What hours?

Maybe some day you will "do" the "doable" with us :D

As mentioned earlier, Media Luna is not to be confused with a full-fledged dive resort.

Is there anything lacking that someone who did want a full-fledged dive resort might miss?

Richard.

As I said...every individual has different likes and dislikes. With regard to diving, I can't imagine anything lacking. With regard to the resort, some don't like the fact that it is somewhat secluded farther east than even CocoView. Transportation to the tourist area of West End is not cheap. It's not a PARTY atmosphere...not a late-night spot.

If you are content with natural beauty, hanging out at the pool, maybe meeting other guests for a little volleyball...spending some time in the recreation area shooting pool...booking tours to other parts of the island for the day...enjoying a massage at the spa...even hanging out in the bungalow watching TV...then you would be content at Media Luna. I "know" you from other posts on ScubaBoard and am familiar with your family situation. I think this is the kind of place your wife might enjoy. But you have to be the judge of that. It's not something I could do. Hubby and I TRIED to plan a relaxing week of doing nothing before our friends arrived, but we only made it one day before we had to get out and dive! Like I said...each person is different - I am more different than MOST wives

, so I'm curious:

1.)What led you to try this place, and to prefer it so as to keep returning to it?

Richard.

A couple of things keep us returning to dive with Aqua Adventures. First at 74 I have learned to enjoy being spoiled with valet service diving....didn't like it that much about it 20 years ago (you know don't touch my stuff) but now.........kind of nice!
Next we go to all the regular sites on the South side, Mary's Place, Missing Link, Never Stain Byte, Gold Chain Reef, Mr. Bud, Calvin's Crack, Anka's Place, Pirates Point, Forty Foot Point, etc, etc, etc. But we also have the opportunity with Aqua to break away from the usual places and take off to places like Cayos Cochonis, Barbareta and Pigeon Cay.
