A 61-year-old
diver died during a sea trip Wednesday off
La Rochelle . The accident occurred around 2 p.m. on the Rochebonne plateau, a shoal area 35 nautical miles (64 km) west of the
island of Ré , indicates
the Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic. The victim missed the last decompression stop before returning to the surface, says
France Bleu.
This is a mandatory safety stop for divers so that they can properly remove nitrogen from the compressed air they breathe. The man then descended 20 meters lower. It was his comrades from the group of divers who brought him up unconscious. A helicopter was sent to the area but rescuers and doctors could only note the death of the diver.
